| When I woke this morning, I was surprised I remembered my dream. It was very short: I was shaking hands with a young pilot who smiled at me, gave me a friendly nod and left. I watched him leave with a swaggering gait, a flight jacket thrown nonchalantly over his arm. The jacket suddenly fell without the pilot noticing. I ran to the jacket, picked it up and... woke up. I can't help feeling I'd remembered something important. If I could just take a close look at that jacket. A plane crashed here a while ago, so some of the pilot's belongings may have ended up in the City. Martha told me that everything related to the accident is shrouded in mystery and evil spirits prevent anyone from learning more. I can't deal with them alone; will you help? |

この朝目が覚めた時、夢を覚えていて驚いたよ。夢は短かったんだ、僕は若いパイロットと握手をしていて、彼は僕に微笑み、親しげに頷き立ち去った。彼はパイロットジャケットを腕に無造作にかけ、意気揚々と得意げに歩き去り、僕はそれを見送っていた。そのジャケットがパイロットが気づかないうちにするりと落ちたんだ。僕はジャケットに駆け寄り、それを拾い上げて…そこで目が覚めた。何か重要なことを思い出しかけてたって気がしてならないんだ。あのジャケットを近くでまじまじと見られたらぁ。ちょっと前飛行機がここに墜落したよね、それならパイロットの持ち物も一緒にシティやって来てるんじゃないだろうか。マーサが言うには、その事故に関することは全部謎に包まれていて、邪悪な存在が墜落について更に詮索しようとする者を妨げているんだって。僕一人ではこれをどうにかするのは無理なんだ、手伝ってくれるよね？ | 💬私は幽霊が夢を見るっていう事に驚きです。 |

| The other day I went to the Station to chat with the Conductor and while I was talking to him I suddenly realized just how lonely he is! It really gave me the chills! He's tied to his Station like a guard dog. I'd probably lose my mind if it was me, but the Conductor's tough; he can take it. So I've got an idea: maybe you could get him a walkie-talkie? Sure, it's a pretty primitive means of communication, but at least it's something. I tried to find one myself, but there are some creepy goings-on at the one place you might find something like that. It's as if someone read my mind and brought all my secret fears to life! |

この間、コンダクターとお喋りしに駅に行ってね、話している最中にふと、この人はなんて孤独なんだろうって思ったのよ！それを考えたとき背筋が寒くなったわ！彼は番犬よろしく駅に縛り付けられてるのよ。私がその立場だったら、とても正気でいられないわ。でもコンダクターはタフだから、この状況に耐えていられるのよ。それでいい考えが浮かんだの、もしトランシーバーを彼に持って行ってあげたら？確かに、通信手段としてはかなり原始的だけど、少なくともないよりいいでしょ。自分でそれをどうにか見つけようとしたんだけど、そういう物が見付かりそうな場所は、なんか気味の悪いことになっちゃってて。まるで誰かが私の心の中を読んで、秘密にしてる恐怖の体験を全部呼び覚ましたような感じなのよ！ |
he can take it: 辛いことなどに耐えられる。it は置かれている状況全体を指している。目の前にあることに位の意味。 at least it's something: ここのsomething は何か重要なもの、何かいいものというニュアンスで使われている。 💬何となくですが、コンダクターは悠久にも近い時を駅に縛り付けられて過ごしているかのような感じですね。それは普通なら耐えられないような孤独だと思います…。 |
| For me? Why? Although... wait, let me guess: it was Valerie's idea. What a girl! She really thinks I need her help. That kind of concern for others is an alien phenomenon here, a holdover from our past lives. I don't need a walkie-talkie, I have my own means of communication. You hang on to it, but don't say anything to Valerie; let the girl be happy in the thought that she made the Conductor's day. |

俺に？なんでまた？だが…待て、当てさせろ、これはバレリーのアイデアだろう。なんて娘だ！あの娘は俺を助けてやらなきゃって本気で思ってるんだな。他人にそういう関心を寄せられるっていうのはここではそうそうない事だ、ここにいる過去に囚われて生きるような者にはな。俺にはトランシーバーは必要ない、自分の通信手段が別にあるのさ。お前が持っておけよ、でもバレリーには何も言うな。あの娘にはコンダクターに特別良いことをしたって、幸せな気分でいさせてやりたいんだ。 | 💬曖昧な表現をされていますが、過去を引きずって生きる者というのはコンダクターの事なんですかね。バレリーが癒してあげたいと思う気持ちと、コンダクターがそのバレリーを可愛いと思う気持ちのやり取りが良いです。まあ、この父親以上恋人未満みたいな微妙な雰囲気がいいとも言えますね。 |
