for. It literally means "tap and appear mallet." It can also make things bigger or lesser. ★打ち出の小槌：数多くの日本の昔話に登場する不思議な小槌。一寸法師では体を大きくしてもらうのに使われたりもしている。 |

★唐傘(からかさ)お化け：一つ目一つ足の番傘のお化け。一本足で飛びながら人を追いかけて脅かすがそんなに害があるわけでもない。 ★Karakasa-obake: a Japanese yokai which has one big eye and one foot. It is jumping and chasing after people to surprise, but is almost harmless. |

| If you see a light in a bamboo forest, follow it. It's a tanuki spirit that guides wanderers. |

★化け狸：四国地方には狸信仰があるので、狐のように狸を祀っていたりする。徳利に乗った或いは徳利を持った狸の置物が有名。 ★Bake-danuki (化け狸): a yokai of a Japanese raccoon dog, tanuki (狸). In Shikoku region, it is revered as well as kitsune. |

| Kanko is a spirit of a wise fox that an experienced sorcerer can summon with a magic pipe. |

★管狐(くだぎつね)：竹筒に入れるほど細いことからその名がある。人に憑りついて悪さをしたり、知恵を授けたりするらしい。 ★Kuda-gitsune (管狐): a yokai of very slim kitsune which can sneak into bamboo cylinder. It sometimes haunts people or gives advise. |

| Sailors are afraid of this spirit, as it can damage the ship's cables when riding on the wind. |

船乗りたちはこの妖怪を恐れているんだ、何故って風に乗って船の縄を切ってしまうんだからね。 |
★鎌鼬(かまいたち)：鋭い爪を持った鼬(いたち)の妖怪で、旋風を起こし、人を切りつけたりする。 ★Kama-itach (鎌鼬)：a weasel yokai which has sharp craws and cuts people's skins and things. It comes on the wind and people are cut without noticing. |

★百物語(ひゃくものがたり)：蝋燭を百灯して、一つ怪談を終える毎に一つ消して行くと、最後の一つを消した後にホンモノの妖怪が現れると言われている。 ★Hyaku-monogatari (百物語): a gathering of telling scared stories, Kaidan (怪談), each other. They say that each time you finish a kaidan story, you extinguish a candle, then when the last candle is extinguished, a real yokai appears. It literally means hundred stories. |
