| You know, there's a reason I moored at the City of Shadows. According to a pirate legend, the City has countless treasures hidden inside it. But there's one problem, shiver me timbers! There's no map for these treasures. The legend was passed on through whispers, and some parrots... those lifelong pirate companions learned it by heart. What I'm saying is, there should be five parrots that each know a part of the legend and part of the way to the treasure. We need to find them. Shall we chase this untold wealth together? |

お前も分かってるだろうが、シャドウ=シティに引きずり込まれるのには何かしら訳がある。海賊に伝わる伝説によれば、シティには数えきれないほどのお宝が隠されてるらしい。だが一つ問題があってな、ちくしょうめ！そのお宝には地図がないのさ。密かに語り継がれる伝説では、数羽の鸚鵡(おうむ)…長生きの海賊の連れ合いがそれを空(そら)で覚えてるんだとよ。要するに俺が言いたいのはだな、伝説の一部とお宝への道の一部を知ってる鸚鵡(おうむ)が五羽いるはずだって事さ。そいつらを見付けなくっちゃならん。この未だ明かされぬお宝ってのを一緒に追いかけてみないか？ |

ちくしょうめ。くそったれ。数ある海賊用語の一つで驚きや忌々しさを表す。timberは太い木材で船の梁を指しているらしい。数多くの海賊物フィクションに採用されている表現。 learn it by heart: そらで覚えている。暗誦できる。 |

The parrots are cooing and feeding each other from their beaks. hornswoggle: 担ぐ、騙すのスラング。I'll be hornswoggled!で俺は騙されてるのか→本当かよ！という意味。 cooing: 鳥がクークー喉を鳴らして愛情表現する feeding each other from beaks: 嘴(くちばし)から餌をやりっこする。鳥の愛情表現の一つ。 |

These should be five of them, after all. When all the parrots are together, they'll tell us the pirate legend. |

| It's easier to negotiate with a bunch of shellfish than with pirate parrots! They curse endlessly, yet never say a word about the treasure! Find the Emerald Macaw. I don't think these birds will crack until we have all five of them. |

海賊の鸚鵡どもと交渉するのに比べたら、自分勝手なヤツラと話をする方がよほど楽だぜ！ヤツラときたらずっと悪態をつき通しで、それでもお宝の事は一っ言も喋らねえんだからな！エメラルドのコンゴウインコを探すんだ。五羽全部集めるまであの鳥たちが口を割るとは思えねえ。 |
curse: 悪態をつく crack: 口を割る ※拷問や尋問で無理やり口を割らせるという意味。自ら口を割るという自動詞も、人を目的語に取って口を割らせるという他動詞もある。日本語でも口を割ると言うので違和感がないと思うが、比喩的な表現。綺麗な英語ではないのであまり辞書に載っていない。 |

I listened to them carefully and drew a map. So, two hundred steps north of the City Hall, and then... Thunder and tarnation!
